Workshop: The Art of Darning with Emma Mathews
Socko is on a mission! This is because the most sustainable clothes are the ones we already own. If we can extend the lives of the things we own and embrace a more conscious consumer mindset, we will have a positive effect on people and our planet. Not to mention that darning is highly therapeutic, rewarding and is a commitment of care that brings us closer to our possessions.
The workshop is designed to be an introduction to darning for complete beginners. It’s suitable for all levels of textile know-how, from those who have never threaded a needle to avid knitters. The session teaches the fundamentals of how to create a secure mend and sparks inspiration for the versatility of the technique. It’s a fun, hands-on, informal session that spreads the joy of bringing life back to damaged clothing - combining form and function in a way that will serve you for years to come.
During this 2 1/2 hour workshop, we'll start with a brief history of techniques from different cultures and look at examples and tools. The majority of the time will then be practical as Socko founder Emma teaches you how to darn your own clothing. You're welcome to bring items of your own that need mending, there'll be plenty of fabric to practise on. and you'll go home not only with your acquired skills but with your very own mending kit as well.
Your teacher Emma is the founder of sustainable British sock brand Socko. She’s a life-long maker and is passionate about the positive, mindful impact craft can have on our wellbeing. Previous students say:
"Fantastic darning course that took an absolute beginner like me to darning my first sock. Emma is a wonderful teacher providing her knowledge, tips and tricks in a way that is engaging and easy to understand."
Mary D
"I’m a keen knitter, and have blindly attempted repairs before, but I was blown away by Emma’s workshop. It was well thought-out and sensitive to different people’s craft experiences. I would recommend it to everyone!"
Daniel
As always, students receive 10% off on purchases made on the day of the workshop. And of course, there is tea and nibbles available during class.

Trunk Show: Observations by Lotta H. Löthgren
Join us in our celebration of Lotta H. Löthgren's book Observations: Knits and Essays from the Forest
The book is described as a knitted walk through the forest and the seasons. With a keen eye for the innate wonders of the natural world, Lotta combines knitwear designs with notes of the landscape she calls home: a small village in the southeast of Sweden, nestled among forests and lakes. There, she spends her days writing, knitting, designing knitwear and hand-dyeing yarn. Lotta leads a small, quiet life close to nature and the changing seasons. As a designer, she loves to interpret natural elements into practical and wearable garments, perfect for her way of life.
Observations includes nine knitwear patterns for long-lasting, wearable garments and accessories, along with essays about living a life close to nature. The patterns have been created in a quiet conversation with the land, drawing elements from the natural world and translating them into stitches and fabric.
This is your unique opportunity to pick the brains of the designer herself, get advice on yarns and sizings, have your book signed, squish and try on the gorgeous designs and maybe enjoy a reading or two from the essays in Lotta's new book.
When: Saturday October 28th 12:00 noon – 16:00pm
