Traditions Revisited - Modern Estonian Knits is truly something special and quite different from your 'average' pattern book.

“Knitting has helped me to understand my roots and kind of fall in love with them again.”

Growing up in Washington D.C., Aleks Byrd's school would hold international days during which her mother would dress her in the Estonian national costume. It was often 30ºC, and Aleks would be sweating in her woolen skirt and socks and feel she was an involuntary ambassador of Estonian culture.

Back then, she didn’t understand the meaning of her background, but these days Aleks, whose mother is Estonian Canadian and her father American, is proud and thankful. Being Estonian is an important part of her identity and profession which is strongly reflected in her knit designs.

Drawing on her Estonian heritage Aleks introduces us to the beautiful world of Estonian knitting through modern designs that show off techniques such as Roosimine and Estonian Braids. This book is indeed a love lettering to both her heritage and knitting itself. For a small country on the Baltic Sea, Estonia’s tradition and love for handicraft greatly surpasses its size. Estonian knitting is all about techniques, embellishment and regionality. Each knit tells a story about the knitter and where they live.

For years Aleks has been diving into the Estonian knitting culture and now her long-awaited book is finally here. Traditions Revisited – Modern Estonian Knits is an introduction to Estonian knitting, both traditional and traditional-inspired. It includes 19 patterns, ranging from mittens to sweaters, that blend seamlessly with modern knitting styles. With 216 pages featured 19 beautifully crafted designs and hand drawn illustrations (by Aleks herself) guiding readers through various techniques anyone can see the labour of love that went into making this book.
