Ylva, in a practical DK weight, is made from German wool - with a difference. Every step of the process, from sheep to the finished plant-dyed hank, is done with sustainability in mind. Ylva was originally named Schafswolle #03 and while it has a new name and is made in larger batches, the quality remains the same.
The fibre is collected from small farms in Northern and Eastern Germany and then plantdyed in Austria. The dye house in Vienna thoroughly checks the yarn's colourfast, ensuring that they will stand the test of time. With Ylva, Hey Mama Wolf actively support local sheep farms, making sure to buy the fleece from farmers at a fair price. This is a rustic wool, sturdy and hard wearing, which makes it well suited for everyday wear to be loved for years and years to come. Ylva is a versatile yarn and is ideal for textured stitches, brioche, cables and colourwork. Be sure to always wash your swatches before evaluating tension and fabric style as Ylva blooms considerably and becomes noticeably softer after washing.
The colours 1204 Madder Red and 1101 Reseda Yellow are intensively dyed in order to produce such magnificent colours and can still bleed during knitting and blocking. It is therefore recommended to pre-wash these colours in particular before using them. This works wonderfully by putting the yarn into a wash bag in the washing machine with a mild wool wash on a cold, delicate cycle.
Indigo shades 1403 and 1406 may come off onto the hands while working them, but this is easily removed with a little soap and water. However, indigo does not bleed into other colours and can be used without pre-washing the yarn beforehand.
