Garthenor’s mission is to promote and provide a variety of sustainable, organic and British yarns in an ecologically responsible way. Their aim is to help secure the future of British organic agriculture and the British textile industry. All the wool you’ll see under the Garthenor name have been certified to global organic standards.
Garthenor started in the 1990s, with wool produced from their own sheep. Since then they expanded faster than their flock, and now they buy raw fleeces from around the UK directly from the farmer – no middle man, which means all Garthenor wool is fully traceable from sheep to hank.
Garthenor's artisan yarns are produced from wool sourced directly from the finest certified organic flocks in the UK, and are carefully blended to produce deep, heathery, and also duotoned shades in a wonderful palettes.
Garthenor Beacons is a DK strong enough for practical wear. A good DK yarn needs purpose and structure, and Beacons has that in abundance. This reimagined blend is softer than ever, perfect for next to the skin projects. The Polwarth comes from Dunbar Island, part of the Falkland Islands, famed for the snow white superfine fleece. These sheep produce a long, smooth fibre that has excellent stitch definition and soaks up dye like a sponge. Adding some depth and texture to the Polwarth is some long and lustrous Romney and stunningly rich Hebridean in Cinder, our grey base.
This deliciously round 3-fold, worsted spun yarn shows clear stitch definition and loves texture and cabled stitches and the colour palette includes bold and punchy solids, subtle heathers and magical marls.
