If you have never heard of an MKAL then you are in for a treat. MKAL stands for Mystery Knit A Long. That means the final shape of the shawl is a complete mystery. Every week a clue is revealed that takes you in a new direction or a new stitch or a completely different colour. This years MKAL starts on Friday the 9th of October and a new clue is released on the following three Fridays. This addictive form of knitting creates a fun energy as fellow knitters across the world are knitting the same adventure.

All we know is this will be a large shawl, like the other MKALs. We know it is knit in a 4ply and we know we need two skeins of a main colour and three contrast colours. There is no particular fibre type specified so have fun and mix and match from your stash or choose different fibres for the pure love of the colour. I think the main thing is to have a good contrast between your main colour and contrast colour. If you are looking for some inspiration then I have put some ideas below.

The pattern is available to buy on Ravelry: Slipstravaganza or Gumroad: Slipstravaganza.

A rich blue paired with pale speckles will make the contrast colours really pop. I'm going through a pink an blue phase so this selection really appealed to me.

From left to right: Hedgehog Fibres Twist Sock in Dew, Bloom, Harvest and Teacup.

Fyberspates Vivacious 4ply pairs really well with the Hedgehog Fibres Twist Sock. It also offers a fun range of slightly variegated solids. Greens are my first colour love.

From left to right: Vivacious 4ply in 615 Lundy Island Hedgehog Fibres Twist Sock in Pesto, DRK and Wildcard.

If merino singles are more your style I love this earthy combo which uses a lighter main colour.

From left to right: Hedgehog Fibres Skinny Singles in Crystal. Black Elephant Merino Singles in Pecan Pie. Hedgehog Fibres Skinny Singles in Artichoke and Black Elephant Merino Singles in Harvest Moon

As no fibre type is specified it opens it up to any 4ply yarn. I really love Hillesvåg and Sølje the 4ply weight would give you a nice wooly end result.

From left to right: Hillesvåg Sølje in Naturgrå, Marinblå, Gråfiolett and Mørk Rosa.

The next few options I'm going to pair with the solid coloured Socks Yeah 4ply. This yarn has a great range of colours and is also at a good price point. Offering you tons of colour matching options. Remember that Socks Yeah are 50g so you would need two of each for the contrasts and four if you are using it as a main colour.

From left to right Garnsurr Søkke Merino in Lekje / Wehayz. Socks Yeah in 114 Peridot, 1002 Krypton and 1001 Helium.

A second Garnsurr/Socks Yeah combo but with a pinky vibe. As above you will need two of the socks yeah for the contrasts and four if you are using it as a main colour.

From left to right Garnsurr Søkke Merino in Nuperose. Socks Yeah in 116 Ruby, 102 Ammolite and 128 Lepidolite.

The sumptuous Norne Yarn is a joy to work with. This earthy but bright combo looks like it would be fun to knit. As above you will need two of the socks yeah for the contrasts and four if you are using it as a main colour.

From left to right: Norne Yarn Merino / Silk / Yak Singles in The Vikings are coming. Socks Yeah in 104 Sphene, 118 Citrine, 108 Chyrso.

The rich colours or Countess Ablaze make it the perfect deep main colour. I paired this one with the socks yeah again and I love that even though the Countess skein is so dark it has little colour notes in it aha pair well with the Socks Yeah. As above you will need two of the socks yeah for the contrasts and four if you are using it as a main colour.

From left to right: Countess Ablaze Rebel Batch in To do what is right. Socks Yeah in 1005 Radon, 106 Kunzite and 101 Obsidian.

This mystery knit also needs 54 stitch markers! Maybe now is the time to stock up. This Flight of Stitch Markers would give you all the possibilities you would ever need.
