Natural Dye Workshop with Lola Lely Studio

Join Lola Lely for the day, Saturday September 2nd, venturing into the fascinating world of Natural Dyeing.

In this workshop you will learn all the processes that are involved in dyeing your own fabric using natural dyes - most of which can be found in the kitchen. Lola will teach you how to grind dried herbs, spices and teas using a variety of pestle and mortars to create concentrated natural dyes, and will explain the different techniques used to mordant cloth before the dyeing.

You will then move on to dye your own sample swatches, and do some experimenting of your own to truly gain the understanding of the natural dyeing process. Participants will select a variety of different weight cloth pre-mordanted with vinegar, alum, salt and iron - which then are rinsed clean and ready for dying.

You will also be showed how to dye larger pieces of fabric using concentrated natural dyes. Instructions will also be given on how to create a multitude of hues and colours through timed dyeing and overdyeing.

The workshop lasts for a whole day, from 10am to 16.30pm - with a break for lunch and social conversation.

All participants will be emailed a detailed pdf workshop guide on beforehand.

The dyed cloth created during the workshop can be used to make your own patchwork apron which Lola will show you how to do in the following workshop, Saturday September 9th - the Patchwork and Boro cloth Apron Making Workshop.
